CNNMoney.com has ranked Beaufort one of the top 25 places to retire in a new list featuring college towns with continuing-education opportunities for older learners.

The list, created by the editors of Money Magazine, touted areas where retirees can "improve your golf game, take up a new hobby, or just enjoy a well-deserved break" while expanding their intellectual horizons.

Beaufort was the 18th city listed, behind areas such as Lexington, Ky.; Austin, Texas; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Lincoln, Neb.; Fort Collins, Co.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Boise, Idaho, according to the website.

Taking the top slot was Durham, N.C., followed by Hanover, N.H.

Despite being featured as the backdrop for blockbuster movies such as "Forrest Gump," "The Prince of Tides" and "The Big Chill," "fame hasn't spoiled" the quintessentially southern city with its ante-bellum mansions and moss-covered oaks, according to the website.

"The town is still far enough off the beaten path that you have to really look for it," the article said. "Of course, newcomers will quickly realize that there's more to the town than just a pretty face. At the University of South Carolina Beaufort, older learners are privy to dozens of one-day and multi-session classes in history, literature, religion, music and more."

Mayor Billy Keyserling called the designation wonderful and a validation of the city's and region's focus on USCB as a critical part of the community.

"I think it's fabulous," Keyserling said.

USCB Chancellor Jane Upshaw called the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Carolina Beaufort a "significant contributor to the quality of life in Beaufort and our region."

"The rich and varied curriculum and the outstanding local experts who serve as instructors have catapulted our institute to its place as one of the top 10 percent of OLLI centers in the U.S.," Upshaw said in a statement that thanked curriculum committees, OLLI staff and more than 1,300 member volunteers "who have helped Beaufort, S.C., become one of the top 25 places to retire in the nation."
