Hilton Head Prep cross country coach Liz Nash wanted to use her team's first race of the season as a measure of how far the runners had come and what work was left to be done.

But as much as the fourth-annual Run for Ret 5k was about competition for the Dolphins, the race also served to benefit a cause near to the school and its students. The race, held Saturday morning at Prep, raises money for the RET Pediatric Cancer Foundation, which was founded in memory of Ret Thomas, a Hilton Head Prep student who died in 2000 -- at age 14 -- after a year-long battle with Ewing's Sarcoma.

"For us, it's very personal, because it's one of our Prep students that we're honoring," Nash said. "The kids are always very passionate about it. It was just a great way to start our season."

Nash's girls squad finished tops among the high schools entered. Bluffton won the boys high school division. Individually, Prep's Sarah Garrat, with a time of 21 minutes, 1 second, was the top overall female runner.

Hilton Head Island's Brian Knapp, with a 16:54, was the top overall finisher for the second consecutive year. Bluffton's Harris Reeves (17:55) and Demetrius Smalls (17:57) finished first and second in the boys high school division.

The race was the first of the season for Prep. Nash said the race, which started at Prep's campus and worked its way through Sea Pines Forest Preserve, showed her where the Dolphins stood with their conditioning.

"I was very pleased with the results," she said. "It's a lot of hard work. I'm looking forward to a very good season."

For Bluffton, the race was the team's second in two weeks. The Bobcats girls and boys teams each finished second at the Kickoff Classic in Savannah.

Bluffton coach Dana House was missing one of her top boys -- her son, Landon -- and was without three runners on the girls side due to the holiday weekend. But she said she was pleased with how the Bobcats ran.

"With that, I was happy to see the result," she said. "Some other ones stepped up. That was nice to see you have that experience in a team."

Like Hilton Head Prep, Bluffton runners also participated in more than just the race. The team chooses a service project to conduct each year. And the Bobcats chose this year to donate to Thomas' foundation.

"It's a good thing," House said. "All the way around."
