Beaufort High School's offense received the message Friday: Keep it basic.

For a second consecutive week, the Eagles did not need multiple looks to dismantle an opponent. Beaufort High did not deviate from a few core calls during its 48-6 victory at rival Battery Creek High School.

"I'm still trying to figure out this team," Beaufort High coach Mark Clifford said. "And they are, too. They're working hard to get an identity and find out who they are and how good they are."

Clifford told the Eagles their next opponent would serve as a good measure. The Eagles open their Region 8-AAAA schedule with a trip to Fort Dorchester on Sept. 10.

But until then, the team was going to keep it simple.

Eagles running back Demeo Holmes said "52" and "53" were most often heard Friday in the huddle -- run right or run left out of a split back set. And the sequence proved difficult for the Dolphins to stop.

Eagles running back Josh McPherson ran for three touchdowns. Holmes added two rushing scores during the second half. And Beaufort High, which only attempted four passes during a Week 1 victory at Hilton Head High, threw eight times, including a 12-yard touchdown strike from Beau Brown to Jordan Broussard during the second quarter. The touchdown was the Eagles' first through the air this season.

"That was the plan, to get more passes," Broussard said. "We didn't throw much last week."

Dolphins defensive lineman DaQuan Jamison said Battery Creek expected the Eagles to run the ball as often as they did, that there was little secret what Beaufort High was going to do. But, for a second week, an opponent failed to slow Beaufort High's ground attack. The Eagles have rushed for 11 touchdowns their first two games.

"They did everything we expected them to do," Battery Creek coach Carlos Cave said. "Their backs run hard. What they do, they do well."

The Eagles defense did not allow Battery Creek a first down until midway through the second quarter. And the next play, Beaufort High came away with one of its four interceptions.

Cave, whose team has turned the ball over nine times in two games, said the Dolphins' troubles on offense are greater than one player. The pass-oriented spread yielded one completion during the first half.

"It's sporadic with everything," Cave said. "We're just not doing the things we need to do to get it done."

Beaufort High benefited from solid field position from the beginning. Linebacker JaClay Mixon's first of two interceptions ended the Dolphins' first drive inside their own 10-yard line. McPherson scored his first touchdown two plays later.

The Eagles began all but one of their drives in Battery Creek territory.
