Hilton Head man charged with assault and battery

A 22-year-old man was charged with third-degree assault and battery Wednesday night after an altercation with a neighbor at Cotton Hope Apartments on Hilton Head Island.

The man was intoxicated and knocked on a 41-year-old neighbor's door to ask for a cigarette at about 10 p.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report. The neighbor said he refused and shut his door. The man then began kicking the door and yelling obscenities.

The man told officers he kicked the door twice and walked away after his neighbor "slammed the door in his face," according to the report.

When the victim went outside a few minutes later to get something from his car, the two got into an argument, and the man punched his neighbor in the face several times, according to both men's interviews.

The victim called police, and two deputies had to force the assailant to the ground during the arrest to prevent him from injuring one of the officers, according to the report.
