In addition to his duties with Hilton Head Christian, he was an assistant coach for the Lowcountry Heat this summer, an American Legion baseball team that advanced to the state tournament for the first time in program history.
THA'S LAYMAN NAMED ESPN RISE ATHLETE OF THE DAY
Thomas Heyward Academy multi-sport standout Ashlie Layman was named ESPN RISE athlete of the day on Tuesday.
ESPN RISE is a high school sports magazine. The award is given out each day based on nominations the publication receives on its website, rise.espn.go.com.
The site talked about Layman's stellar softball season in the spring, where she earned SCISAA Class 3-A Softball Player of the Year honors.
LELIE LEADS DOLPHINS, BEGINS COLLEGE SEARCH
Battery Creek High School senior Ciera Lelie saw many of her former teammates move to Whale Branch High School before the volleyball season began.
Coach Stephanie Weltz said the split took almost exactly half of Battery Creek's players from a season ago. The new dynamic means leadership is thin on Weltz's squad. Lelie, a setter, has been the director the Dolphins need as they begin the season.
"She's doing well as far as telling people where to go and what they need to do," Weltz said.
Lelie received interest from the University of Hawaii as a junior. And Weltz is preparing film from the Dolphins' early matches this season to send the school.
Weltz also praised Dolphins senior Katie Bogardus for the role she has taken after the split.
"She is doing a fantastic job as far as mentoring our brand-new players," Weltz said. "Between Ciera and Katie, they definitely run our floor for us."
BOBCATS TO HANG WILKERSON'S JERSEY
It will come half a year late, but the banner jersey tradition at the Bluffton High School baseball field will continue.
The Bobcats plan to hang a banner at Hank Johnston Stadium next week with a replica college jersey of former middle infielder J.W. Wilkerson, who went on to earn a scholarship for Division II program Toccoa Falls College, where he played as a freshman last season.
The ceremony will continue the tradition the high school has started, in which baseball players who advance to college programs earn a spot on the fence at Hank Johnston Stadium.
PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK
Vanessa Scott, Whale Branch volleyball -- In the Warriors' season opener, the school's inaugural match, Scott had four kills, two blocks, five assists and five aces to help lead Whale Branch to a three-game sweep (25-19, 25-14, 25-13) of Lake Marion.
Lily Bartell, Hilton Head High girls golf -- In the 16-team Palmetto Preview at Mid-Carolina Club, the Seahawks golfer took second overall with a 71, after losing a two-hole playoff, to help her team to a second-place finish.
Madeleine Gray, Beaufort Academy swimming -- At a tri-meet at Bluffton on Thursday, Gray won the 100 breaststroke, took second in the 200 individual medley and was part of second-place relay teams in the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle.
