A 31-year-old Hilton Head Island man was charged with attempted murder after he fired a rifle at a woman Wednesday night, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

McKinley Robinson pointed the gun at the woman, fired "afew shots" and missed, Capt. Bob Bromage said.

Bromage declined to release more details, citing an ongoing investigation.

Beaufort County Sheriff's officials were called to Allen Road after a report of shots fired at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to an incident report released Thursday.

The victim is a 44-year-old Squire Pope Road resident, according to the report.

Robinson also was charged with possession of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

He was being held on a $10,000 bond Thursday afternoon, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center's log.

Robinson has been arrested 26 times in Beaufort County since 1997, according to the log. Many of the charges were non-violent misdemeanors, but they include a felony charge of assault and battery with intent to kill in 2003. In that case, Robinson pled guilty to other charges, court records show.
