WHAT IS ABOUT TOWN?

As you drive around northern Beaufort County, you notice a sign for a new shop, new construction or road work. Or you realize that an old store you once frequented has gone out of business. About Town answers the question, "What's going on here?"

If you have information about something that has changed the local landscape or if you wonder about one of those changes and would like us to tell you more about it, contact reporter Juliann Vachon at jvachon@beaufortgazette.com or 843-706-8184.

Less than six months after it opened at the Beaufort Town Center, Dancing Dogs Yoga outgrew its 700-square-foot space and opens today at a larger location that will allow bigger classes and more retail offerings.

"We started small, thinking that was better than starting too large," owner Shelley Lowther said. "But we really just outgrew it. ... We've had a really positive response."

The yoga studio first opened in Beaufort in March, led by Lowther, who previously taught at the Wardle Family YMCA.

With almost 1,500 square feet, the studio's new home in Newcastle Square at 1211 Newcastle St., Suite C, offers about twice as much space as the previous location, Lowther said.

Lowther will host a special $5 yoga class from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday called "Grace This Space" to introduce the new location to current and prospective students. The class is open to all ages and levels, she said.

Along with bigger classes, Lowther said she plans to expand class offerings, add a class for seniors and teenagers and offer more retail products from brands like Rese Pilates, I Love Yoga and Be Present.

The studio offers a variety of classes seven days a week taught by certified instructors for people of all ages, Lowther said.

Classes typically last 75 to 90 minutes and cost $14 per session, $60 for five classes or $100 for 10, Lowther said.

Never done the downward-facing dog -- or any other yoga pose, for that matter? No problem. Beginners are welcome at classes and can also sign up for a six-week Yoga 101 program, she said.

"We take all of the fear out of it, take all of the mystery out of it and give people the basics so they don't feel intimidated," Lowther said.

The studio also offers a community yoga class, in which participants "pay what you can, when you can," according to the company's website.
