CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCES ROSTER

The 30th annual Hilton Head Island Celebrity Golf Tournament will take place Sept. 4 at the Robert Trent Jones Course in Palmetto Dunes and Sept. 5 at Harbour Town Golf Links.

The following celebrities are scheduled to appear:

The tournament benefits 20 children's charities in the Lowcountry. Each day of the tournament will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

A local tournament will be Sept. 3 at the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall at a special rate. The full celebrity field will not playbut some will. The rate includes a ticket to the party held at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa on Sept. 3.

HANK HANEY IJGA OPENS NEW PRACTICE FACILITY

The Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy has opened a new 6,350-square-foot performance center in Bluffton.

The building is located on Red Cedar Street, between Pinecrest Golf Course where IJGA students train and Lakes At Myrtle Park where the students live.

The center includes six putting greens, six hitting stations, three video hitting stations with JCV Video software and a six-station chipping area. There is also a high-definition golf simulator system equipped with a 14-foot screen that features 15 golf courses, nine driving ranges and other golf challenges for students to experience.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for later in the month after students return to the academy.

FORMER IJGA INSTRUCTOR NAMED HEAD COACH AT NEVADA

Former Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy instructor Jacob Wilner has been promoted to head coach of the men's golf team at the University of Nevada.

Wilner was the lead instructor at the Beaufort County-based IJGA in 2007.

He was an assistant coach at Nevada the past two seasons. He played college golf at Coastal Carolina, earning All-Big South honors.

DOLPHIN HEAD SET TO RE-OPEN SEPT. 1

Dolphin Head Golf Club, a private, member-owned golf course located on Hilton Head Island, has been closed all summer for a total renovation of its greens, tees and fairways.

The course will re-open Sept. 1. Originally built in 1974, the course has been updated with modern turf grasses to improve playing conditions. The tees and fairways have been planted with Celebration Bermuda due to its denser growth pattern and better shade tolerance. The greens have been grassed with Mini-Verde Bermuda for its tight, upright grown pattern and quicker green speeds.

The renovation was managed by Dolphin Head Golf Club head superintendent Larry Howze and golf course architect Clyde Johnston.

LOCALS TO PLAY IN WORLD AMATEUR HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP

Several local golfers will compete in the 2010 GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, set for Aug. 30 through Sept. 3 at more than 50 golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area.

Beaufort golfers in the field are David Brown, John Donat, Herman Gaither and Michael Sinisko.

Bluffton golfers are Bobbie Callaway, Rick Cooler, Lee Delieto, Hugh Edwards, Gary Goodridge, Ken Hellweg and John Turner.

Hilton Head Island golfers are Glen Cunningham, Shackford Green, Gerard Mahieu, Matt Prisby, Beth Taylor and Kay Vance.

Okatie's Ronald Bradley is also in the field.

The 72-hole tournament is the world's largest amateur handicap golf tournament.

LANE COMPETES IN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Hilton Head Island's Christopher Lane tied for 63rd place in the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship over the weekend at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood.

Lane fired a 75-74-77 -- 226, finishing 23 strokes behind winner Drew Ernest of Seneca and runner-up Wesley Bryan of Chapin. Ernest won the tournament in a playoff.

EPPERSON 40TH IN EGOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Hilton Head Island's Chris Epperson tied for 40th place in the eGolf Tour Championship last week at Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va.

Epperson fired a 72-73-69-75 -- 289, finishing 27 strokes behind winner Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu, Hawaii. Epperson earned a check for $1,712 for his effort.

LOCALS COMPETE IN JUNIOR AZALEA

Several local golfers competed in the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Country Club of Charleston.

The event is for ages 13-18.

In the boys tournament, Bluffton's Wesley Long finished tied for fourth place with a 75-67 -- 142, five strokes behind winner Blake Kennedy of Moore.

Bluffton's Tim Godshalk had a 147, Bluffton's Chandler Vilcheck had a 150 and Hilton Head Island's Tate Hoisington fired a 151.

In the girls tournament, Bluffton's Brandi Hammonds scored a 164. North Augusta's McKenzie Talbert won the tournament with a 137.
