Several area churches are taking different approaches to preparing students countywide to return to school.

Here's a look at how these churches are offering new uniforms; fun and games; attitude adjustments; and an afternoon of music and dancing:

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN

First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island is collecting school uniforms to be distributed to children in need in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Uniforms may be dropped off on Sunday and Aug. 8 or through the week at the church office at 540 William Hilton Parkway.

This year is the first year that elementary through high-school children in Beaufort County will be required to wear a uniform to school. Cards are available at the church with uniform sizes and colors needed. The church is collecting white polo shirts without logos, and khaki or navy shorts, pants (no cargo pants or cargo shorts) or skorts.

FIRST ZION MISSIONARY BAPTIST

Students will be water-sliding, walking on three legs in a potato sack and tossing water balloons at the First Zion Missionary Baptist Church's Back to School Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 7. All ages are invited to play in the giant water slides, the sack and egg races, water balloon toss, and 3-on-3 basketball. The Bluffton Township Fire District will provide a hose down. Cotton candy, hamburgers, hot dogs and popcorn will be served. Prizes include bookbags filled with school supplies.

Sponsored by the Zion Young People Department, the cost is $5 for ages 5 and older and free for ages 3 and younger. Children younger than 5 must be accompanied by an adult. The church is at 11 Robertson St., Bluffton.

MOUNT CARMEL BAPTIST CHURCH

Mount Carmel Baptist Church will host its annual Back to School with a New Attitude workshop for parents, grandparents, students, educators, community members, civic groups and local agencies from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 14 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 367 Keans Neck Road, Dale. The event is intended to encourage children to have a positive and successful school year.

ST. PAUL BAPTIST CHURCH

The St. Paul Baptist Church Loving Our Lord Ministries Youth Choir and Anointed Soles Praise Dancers will present their second annual Youth Back to School Gospel Explosion at 4 p.m. Aug. 14. Youths are invited to join in this celebration by rendering one or two performances of their choosing.

JEHOVAH CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST

Jehovah Church of Jesus Christ will sponsor a seminar beginning at 8 a.m. today as part of its Holy Convocation week. Church members will sponsor a seminar beginning at 8 a.m. today. It will include breakfast and lunch.

Topics at the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. classes are: "Joy Through Your Fiery Trials Requires Faith" and "Transition from Single to Married; Maybe Divorced, Separated or Widowed."

Children's class topics at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. are: "My Behavior at School, Church and Home" and "The Meaning of the Lord's Prayer."

Services will close out at 2 p.m. Sunday and will include the celebration of the late founders, Bishop Arthur R. Owens, Mother Rosa Lee Owens and missionary Julia Palmer.

FIRST ZION BAPTIST CHURCH

The Golf Tournament on behalf of Deacon Charles Stoney of First Zion Baptist Church begins at noon today at Old Carolina Golf Course in Bluffton. Cost is $30 a player.

ST. JAMES BAPTIST CHURCH

St. James Baptist Church will culminate the celebration of its church's 124th anniversary at 10 a.m. Sunday with a Communion service. The church is at 209 Dillon Road, Hilton Head Island.

ST. ANDREW BY-THE-SEA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

St. Andrew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church will celebrate Unity Sunday at 10 a.m. Sunday

with a joint worship service. There will be a summer picnic lunch in the Celebration Center and a short hymn sing-along after the service. The church is at 20 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island.

LOWCOUNTRY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Vacation Bible School is from 9 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church. Cost is $5 a child. Children must be age 4 by Aug. 1.

LUNCH HOUR OF POWER

The Lunch Hour of Power is from noon-12:45 p.m. each Wednesday in Helen Galloway's Memorial Chapel of Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals, 808 Bladen St., Beaufort. This week's speaker is Pastor Kevin Wiley of Second Pilgrim Baptist Church.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island's Youth Group will serve at an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at Applebee's restaurant on Hilton Head Island. Cost is $5 and includes bacon, sausage and beverage.

FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH

The Bible Study Ministry of Friendship Baptist Church will sponsor a Gospel Concert at 4 p.m. Aug. 7. The church is at 36 Friendship Lane, Coosaw Island.

ST. MARK'S CHAPEL

During its chaplain's intermittent absences in August and October, St. Mark's Chapel in Port Royal will host guest celebrants from parishes in South Carolina and Georgia.

The following Episcopal priests will preach and celebrate Holy Communion: Aug. 8, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10, the Rev. Colton Smith from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Charleston; Aug. 15, the Rev. Callie Perkins from Grace Church in Charleston; and Aug. 22, the Rev. Canon Jack Nietert from All Saints' Episcopal Church on Tybee Island, Ga.

The chapel is guided by The Episcopal Church, USA, and is at 1104 11th St., Port Royal in the Historic Union Church building.
