Last April, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management reviewed Fripp's setback lines and moved them 20 feet -- right through the middle of our living room. We were afraid our dream home was now worthless, as were more than 100 other oceanfront property owners. And if our property values plummeted, what about the rest of the island?
We will never be able to properly thank state Sen. Tom Davis for what he did for Fripp Island. In January, Davis introduced Senate Bill 1051, which reversed the new setback lines. We knew it was a long shot, we just didn't know how good Davis is at his job.
Through 29 different versions and nine different actions, he skillfully maneuvered this legislation through the maze in Columbia and the bill became law June 28.
Davis showed us he is committed to his constituents and a highly effective legislator. Many people were involved, including Rep. Shannon Erickson, who effectively steered the legislation through the House, but Davis rose to the forefront as our leader.
All of us on Fripp Island are extremely grateful for his efforts. Beyond that, everyone in Beaufort County should feel extremely blessed to have him as our state senator.
