Jasper County sheriff's deputies responded to a reportthat a donkey was in the southbound lane near mile marker 32, a mile from Point South, WTOC reported.
Officers arrived to find a motorist had stopped and was under trees along the shoulder of the road, caring for the donkey, according to the station's website. The donkey had deep gashes on its leg and face, although it was not known if the animal was injured on the road or hurt before he made it onto the interstate.
It was taken to a nearby veterinarian to get stitched up, the station reported.
Attempts to reach the Sheriff's Office and several emergency response agencies were unsuccessful.
Deputies are trying to locate the donkey's owner to determine how it got loose, WTOC reported.
