The S.C. Department of Transportation will allow immediate family members to apply to place a standard roadside memorial sign to honor loved ones killed in wrecks during the previous year on the state's highways.

"In years past, families that have lost loved ones have put their own lives in danger when placing memorials along roadsides," Transportation Secretary H.B. Limehouse Jr. said in a DOT news release. "The SCDOT memorials will provide a dignified and safe way to honor their lost family members."

A main sign will read "drive safely," with a smaller memorial plaque underneath that would include the phrase "in memory of" followed by the victim's name. The cost for the sign is $250 and will stand for two years.

No signs will be erected for victims who were directly involved in criminal activity that led to their deaths, such as DUI, reckless driving or fleeing law enforcement officers, according to the release.

Applications are available at www.scdot.org
