On his way over, the 34-year-old golfer from Charlotte found himself already recapping his second round of the Carolinas PGA South Carolina Open. But there was a slight problem -- Frost was a bit fuzzy on the details.
"I think I birdied (No.) 1, but that's the only (birdie) I can remember," Frost said. "It's a blur now."
His day was much better than that.
The modest Frost followed up a 70 on Tuesday with a 6-under 66 on Wednesday -- the best round of the tournament's first two days -- to take a two-shot lead (-8) into today's final round of the South Carolina Open.
Ivan Schronce made his move with a 69 in the morning wave and sits two shots back at 6-under par for the tournament. Nate Olivo trails by four strokes in third place. And Tuesday leaders Colby Wilson and Nick Jacobi are part of a five-man pack at 3 under.
"I've played a bunch of tournament golf since I was 8 years old, so I've been in about every tournament situation that you can think of," Frost said. "And I can tell you, this is the most fun place to be."
Frost did birdie the first hole -- the detail he got correct -- but it was an eagle on No. 8 that kickstarted his day.
Frost used a 5-wood to reach the green of the par-5 hole in just two shots and made a 30-foot birdie putt for the eagle. He added three more birdies on the back nine as opposed to just one bogey.
Two of those birdies also came par-5 holes-- Nos. 10 and 15 -- making him 6-under par on the five distance holes in the first two rounds.
"Everything was going today," Frost said. "I drove it well, I hit some good iron shots, and I made some good putts. This is a great place to play. I like all the par-5s because they make it interesting."
Everything went in the opposite direction late in the afternoon for Wilson, who began Wednesday at the top of the leaderboard along with Nick Jacobi.
Wilson, an assistant golf professional at Callawassie Island Club, was 2-under par through 15 holes despite fighting the heat that made the afternoon wave an uncomfortable time to play. But he ended the round with a string of two bogeys and one double bogey to lose four strokes on the last three holes, all of which he parred Tuesday.
"I played it a little tight at the end. I didn't play loose enough," Wilson said. "I wasn't confident all day. (Tuesday) I was super confident and could swing freely. ... But I don't think I'm too far out, so I think I still have a chance."
Amateur Payne McLeod is part of the five-way tie for fourth place with Wilson, giving him the best showing by an amateur in the first two days.
McLeod posted a 2-under 70 on Wednesday and bogeyed just one hole -- though he left the round thinking he could have done better.
"I hit it so good today and had a lot of opportunities," McLeod said. "I shot 2-under, but I missed a lot of makeable putts."
McLeod will be one of the 64 golfers left today chasing Frost for the final round lead.
And those 64 have some hope -- Frost is playing in just his second tournament of the year. But signs of rust haven't yet appeared at May River Golf Club.
"Who knows -- maybe they will show up (today)," Frost said. "I'll try not to think about that."
