The Beaufort County School District, partnering with the Confucius Institute at the University of South Carolina and the Hanban Institute in China, will host two teachers from China this fall.
The teachers, assigned to Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate and Broad River elementary schools, will teach Chinese daily to students. They will co-teach with a district early childhood teacher.
The voluntary Chinese program will be offered to first-graders at the Hilton Head school and kindergartners at Broad River. Both classes are full and have waiting lists.
The Hanban Institute will pay the teachers' salaries and health insurance. The teachers will live with local host families.
