Binging on gallons of ice cream, then exercising up to 15 hours a week to keep from gaining weight, Heidi Fingar once suffered from exercise bulimia.

After years of struggling with her diet and image, Fingar found healing with God's help and wants to share her message. Fingar's newly released book, "God is in Your Full-Length Mirror," offers the answers to negative addictions through God in a Biblical five-step process.

"My message is that God has the answers for every struggle that life throws us, including the struggle with food," said Fingar, who lives on Hilton Head and has worked as a fitness instructor 15 years.

At the height of her addiction, she was up and running at 5 a.m., teaching two to three classes a day and running triathlons and half marathons.

Fingar began listening to and talking with God about her problems while she binged and eventually put down her spoon. Like many women, she wanted the Hollywood figure, and Fingar decided she would leave it up to God.

She began exercising moderately three days a week, stopped binging and having second helpings and started eating healthy foods. Today she is smaller than when she constantly dieted, fasted and over-exercised.

The former director of the Sun City Hilton Head fitness center completed her master's degree in public health from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, and is now a wellness and lifestyle coach helping people overcome negative behaviors.

"I want to get people to learn to fish and find a relationship with God and get down to basics, learn what causes you to overeat," Fingar said.

Fingar, a recently ordained minister at Christian Renewal Church of Hilton Head Island, said she's learned that a spiritual element of health is necessary for success.

"If you don't change a person's attitudes and beliefs, you won't change for good," Fingar said. "The last thing we have got to triumph over in order to lead clean lives, to live before God, is overeating. I look at overeating as the final frontier."
