Golf notebook: NHL coach with local ties hopes to qualify for US Senior Open

Four months ago, part-time Bluffton resident Ron Wilson coached the United States men's national ice hockey team to a runner-up finish in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

On Monday, he will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open at Callawassie Island Club.

The Toronto Maple Leafs coach is one of 35 golfers playing for one qualifying spot into the Open, set for July 29 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.

Other golfers in the qualifying field are Bert Atkinson, Perrin Babb, Dave Britton, Bob Collar, Michael Cooney, Thomas Cornelia, John Cottrell, Paul Davies, Jim DeLeon, Duke Delcher, James Ferguson, Frank Ford III, Gordon Gourley, Keith Guise, Douglas Hanzel, Tom Humphrey, Ralph Ireland, Jimmy Koosa, Peter Krause, Steven Liebler, Tom McKnight, David Mears, Mike Metz, Ronald Miller, Greg Moser, Tim Moss, Barry Mullinax, Brian Nommay, Bill Palmer, Jim Prusia, Don Scearce, Bill Smunk, Roger Tant and Stan Waterhouse.

Tee times are 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Stamey competes in Bolle Classic

Bluffton's Nathan Stamey took 63rd place in the eGolf Professional Tour's Bolle Classic over the weekend at Sapona Country Club in Lexington.

Stamey fired a 65-71-69-72 -- 277, finishing 19 strokes behind winner Tommy Biershenk of Boiling Springs. He earned a check for $1,140.

IJGA launches Spanish website

The Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy has launched a Spanish version of its website, espanol.ijga.com.

The Beaufort County academy developed the site with the company MotionPoint, which has also designed sites for Best Buy, Delta Air Lines and Citibank.

WSCGA Match Play under way

The Women's South Carolina Golf Association Match Play Championship is under way at Sanctuary Club at Cat Island. The event will continue today and end Friday.
