Emily Nelson and Lt. Creighton Stuckart are one of three finalist couples in the Get Hitched on Hilton Head contest. While the islanders have a chance for a dream wedding in their backyard, the others are from places known for having Hilton Head-savvy visitors.
Lauren McGookey and Jason Sturdivant are a recent law school graduate and chef, respectively, from Columbus, Ohio. Julie Klein and David Battiste are physical therapists from Pittsburgh.
The winning couple will have their wedding weekend Nov. 12-14 at their choice of island locations: the 18th Green at Harbour Town Golf Links, The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, The Main Street Inn or an oceanfront luxury home.
More than 14 local photographers, caterers and other wedding and resort businesses will donate their services for the couple over the weekend. A group of local businesses started The Get Hitched on Hilton Head Campaign in part to promote the island as a tourism and wedding destination.
MEET THE COUPLES
Lauren and Jason
• Lauren McGookey and Jason Sturdivant's relationship recently endured several hardships. Lauren lost vision in one of her eyes after undergoing surgery to remove ulcers, and Jason was diagnosed with diabetes. Despite this, Jason has found success as a chef in a Columbus-area restaurant and Lauren graduated from law school.
Julie and David
• Julie Klein and David Battiste got engaged on Hilton Head and now are looking to fulfill Julie's late father's wish that she'd get married on the island. The couple are physical therapists who plan to stay in Pittsburgh but make the island a second home.
Emily and Creighton
• Emily Nelson and Lt. Creighton Stuckart met while Emily worked in the office of Creighton's father. They kept their relationship a secret while Creighton finished his final year at The Citadel. But once they unveiled their romance, family and friends approved. Creighton is awaiting deployment, meaning their Hilton Head wedding could be their last time together for months.
