Trio of local golfers get through 1st round of US Open qualifying

Beaufort's Mark Anderson, Hilton Head Island's Chris Epperson and Bluffton's Joel Hendry all made it through the first round of qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship on Monday at Colleton River Plantation.

Anderson had the top score of the day with a 68 followed by Orangeburg's Jacob Burger at 69, Camden's Tommy Gainey at 70, Epperson at 70, Hendry at 71 and Charlotte's Charles Frost at 71.

The six were the only golfers in the field to qualify for the sectional round, which takes place next month at 15 different sites.

The top finishers in each event will qualify for the 2010 U.S. Open to be held June 14-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
