SCGA names Colleton River 'Club of the Year'

Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton was named Club of the Year by the South Carolina Golf Association last week as part of "Golf Week in South Carolina" -- a time set aside each year by the South Carolina Legislature to recognize the impact of golf throughout the state.

Located three miles from the bridge to Hilton Head Island, the private golf community features two courses and was cited by SCGA for its golf facilities, support of the association's programs and support of the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation.

Over the past eight years, Colleton River has hosted the SCGA Tournament, the SCGA Senior Tournament and the USGA Open as well as qualifying events for the Amateur Open and Senior Open. Last year it agreed to host the USGA Amateur qualifiers through the year 2020.

"We are very pleased and honored to have received this recognition," Colleton River general manager Scott Jaccard said. "Our community obviously loves the game of golf, and we are focused on supporting excellence in the game in whatever way we can."

In 1999, Colleton River served as a key location for much of Robert Redford's golf movie, "The Legend of Bagger Vance."

In making the announcement, the SCGA noted that golf's impact in the state exceeds $2.7 billion annually, which makes it one of South Carolina's most significant industries.

More than 33,000 jobs are provided by the industry -- generating more than $834 million in personal income and $276 million in federal, state and local taxes. An estimated $1.2 billion annually is spent by golf-related visitors, a figure which includes lodging, food and other retail sales.
