Thanks to the Trask family of Beaufort for sharing a follow-up on the Cane Island daffodil picking.

More than 1,000 people -- including many families with young children -- came when the daffodil fields were opened to the public March 13 and 14.

The fields are owned by the estate of Flora G. Trask. Her family allowed the public to pick daffodils, with proceeds going to five local nonprofit organizations.

Clark and Evy Trask of Beaufort helped organize the event, which renews a family tradition from years ago that is a beloved harbinger of spring in the Lowcountry.

Clark writes:

The tremendous turnout March 13 and 14 at Cane Island Daffodil Farms proved area residents were ready for a taste of spring. Visitors were incredibly generous with their donations and contributed enough money to give each of the five charities $1,200.

The flowers were at their peak and the fields literally were picked clean by Sunday afternoon.

It was joyous to see friends and families leave with smiles on their faces and bucket loads of dazzling daffodils.

A special thanks goes to all those who contributed their time and talents to make this weekend possible.

Hats off to Eric Daubert for filling the fields with melodious rhythms March 13 and to Irene Goodnight, Bonita Wreden and Bob Guinn for their wonderful performance the next day.

Tux the Clown was a great crowd pleaser March 14 with his zany antics and trick balloons.

Dudley and Donna Holmes, with help from their son Jonathan, who is a third-grader at Riverview Charter School, worked tirelessly directing traffic and parking cars all weekend.

Preston Pruitt and Edward Dukes deserve a shout out for their good humor collecting donations at the gate.

We also appreciated the efforts of Beaufort police officers Hatchett and Hebrard as they directed traffic.

In the end, the day was a wonderful event for all those who participated, with the bonus of raising money for five great beneficiaries.

It has inspired us to plan a fall festival in the fields with lots of live music, camping and venues for arts and crafts displays.
