Politics shouldn't mix with military uniforms

I was surprised to see the photograph in the March 14 paper showing members of Battery Creek High School's Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps presenting the colors at the start of the Beaufort County Democratic Party's 2010 County Convention, which your headline called a "rally."

The wearing of the uniform is prohibited during political activities for Marines and ROTC cadets. For Marines, it is stated in Article 11002 of the Marine Corps uniform regulations. This is reiterated by the commandant of the Marine Corps through the Judge Advocate General's division of Headquarters Marine Corps: "Marines should not appear in uniform at any event which could be construed as partisan political activity." This also applies to JROTC (Marine Corps Order 1533.6E).

This is not a knock on those sharp-looking cadets. I hope they proudly wear the uniform whenever appropriate.
