More than 300 runners are expected to compete in today's 15th annual Hilton Head Shamrock Run.

The 5K run and health walk will start at 8 a.m. in front of New York City Pizza on Pope Avenue. The course will take runners down North Forest Beach Drive and Lagoon Road to the finish area at the corner of Lagoon Road and Pope Avenue.

One of the runners competing will be Brian Lane from Waterford, Mich. The Shamrock Run is one of 52 races he will be competing in across the country this year to raise awareness for research into optic nerve disorders.

Lane started an organization called FiftyTwo4Mom after his mother lost half of her sight to a condition called optic neuropathy. Lane has planned to run one event in each state and Washington, D.C., with a goal of raising $1 million to help other people affected by the condition.
