The purpose of this amendment was clearly to be able to raise an army quickly when the country had no standing army. The British were still on our doorstep, as evidenced by their try to regain "their" colonies in 1812. In those days, wars were fought with single-shot, muzzle-loaded rifles.
If I had my druthers, I would repeal the Second Amendment and replace it with local laws that described when and how the populace can own a gun, what type of gun they can own, where they can keep them and when they can use them.
It makes no sense to me to openly wear a side arm on your hip and be allowed to walk into Starbucks or even maybe a bank.
