WINE

2007 MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Pinot Noir, California; $28

This is another terrific pinot noir from one of the oldest wineries in California, delivering style and depth in each sip. Aromas of black cherries and cola fill the glass and develop into notes of white pepper. The flavors are out of this world -- layers of wild strawberries, cola, soy and leather fill the taste buds, leading into notes of a soft and creamy pinot noir.

The finish lingers lightly with the cherry notes and subtle oak undertones. The of flavors make it perfect for pork or veal dishes.

BEER

Samuel Smith's India Ale, England; $6 pint

This ale has some classic aromas: layers of hops, bread crust and malt with a definite earthiness and almost a peat note. The flavors are terrific with just the right amount of bitterness to balance the malt and fruitiness in the mouth. There are some notes of grain and hops, but once again the medium bitterness perfectly balances the flavors. I found the flavors to gain depth as the beer warmed, exhibiting classic India Pale Ale characteristics. It's terrific with fried fish, brisket or sandwiches -- or better yet to enjoy on its own while the weather is starting to warm.

SPIRIT

The Kraken Black Spiced Rum, Caribbean; $28

This is a new, unique rum and it is easy to find in the store -- just look for the "bizarre and fierce" octopus on the label. This rum has an almost black color with aromas of sweet molasses and sugar cane. It has flavors of vanilla, cream soda, chocolate and caramel with just the right amount of heat to fill out the tasting experience. There's lots of flavor and character in this newcomer to the rum market.

Grab a bottle -- it will be the hit of the party. It's perfect with club soda or juice or just on the rocks.
