VARSITY BASEBALL

Northwood Academy 6, Thomas Heyward 0: The Rebels lost their first game of the season, as the Chargers erupted for three first-inning runs and cruised to a shutout victory.

JA Malphrus went 2 for 3 for Thomas Heyward. Logan Mock and Cliff O'Quinn had one hit each.

Thomas Heyward returns to action Tuesday at Bible Baptist.

VARSITY GIRLS LACROSSE

Hilton Head High 11, Socastee 1: Morgan Raffaele made 10 saves, and was just two seconds from recording a shutout, in the Seahawks' win over the Myrtle Beach visitors.

Gabrielle Avent had four goals to lead the Seahawks (2-1). Nikki Bruno added three goals and two assists and Heather VanWoert scored a pair of goals on her birthday. Jennifer Hansen and Sammi Burns each had a goal and two assists, while Kara Kamperman had a team-high three assists.

Hilton Head High's next contest will be 7 p.m. Friday, when it hosts Blythewood, which defeated them in the state quarterfinals last season.

VARSITY BOYS LACROSSE

Hilton Head High 21, St. Benedictine Military Academy 2: A.J. Weitzner tallied eight goals, and Nick Roberts had four goals and nine assists to lead the Seahawks (5-0).

Nick Bautista added four goals and two assists, John Ferrebee had two goals, and Hayden Lovette, Ross Jones and Campbell Miller scored one apiece.

Clayton Reed made 11 saves and Madison Gayle had three in goal for Hilton Head High, which hosts Wando at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

VARSITY WRESTLING

North-South All-Star Classic: Four Beaufort County wrestlers competed in the 22nd annual event at North Myrtle Beach High School, which featured 70 of the top performers from the Upper and Lower State. The Beaufort County representatives finished with a combined record of 7-2.

Battery Creek's Matt Heinrich and Hilton Head High's Jack Duane both went 2-0 at the event, Hilton Head High's David Beck finished 2-1 and Battery Creek's Luke Johnson was 1-1.

CREW

Stanton Invitational: The Hilton Head Island crew team -- featuring rowers from Hilton Head Island High School and Hilton Head Prep -- competed in the 1,500-meter regatta Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., with the girls novice 8+ squad capturing first place. The victory was the first gold medal for Hilton Head crew since the team reformed in 2008.

Camila Soliz, Leanna Lovely, Caroline Thee, Casey Brooks, Samantha Campbell, Kasey Meredith, Karissa Gill, Kelsey Phillips and coxswain Kelsey Simpson finished in a time of 6 minutes, 52 seconds for the win.

Hilton Head competed in three other races -- boys varsity 4+, girls varsity 4+ and boys novice 8+. The novice boys finished first in their heat, and fourth overall, with a time of 6:27.
