PUTTING CONTESTS
Both serious golfers and those who just like to putt for fun are invited to compete in the first-ever island-wide putting contest. The challenge is to make a 30- to 40-foot putt. The cost is $1 per ball or $10 for 12 balls.
Daily winners will receive one Verizon Heritage clubhouse ticket and will have the chance to compete in the putting championship final at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links. The winner gets a Verizon Heritage Arnold Palmer pass valued at $450 plus a spot in the finals of the Palmetto Electric One-in-One Shootout to be held in May for a chance to win $1 million. The putting locations are:
• Today -- Palmetto Hall Plantation Club, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; Robert Trent Jones Ocean Course, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
GOLF EXHIBITIONS
Complimentary golf exhibitions will be available for golf newcomers and veterans to learn more about the game. There is no cost to attend. The locations are:

• Friday -- Sea Pines Resort Plantation Golf Club, Featuring Thad Daber, 4 p.m.

DEMO DAYS
All week long, golf manufacturers will be showcasing their golf equipment at participating area golf courses and clubs. There is no cost to attend. The locations are:
• Today -- Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones Course, featuring Titleist, Callaway and Nike, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Friday -- Sea Pines Resort Plantation Club, featuring Nike and Titleist, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Colleton River appoints new pro
Colleton River Plantation Club has appointed Derrick Garrou as head professional for the Dye Course.
Garrou was born and raised in Old Fort, N.C. He has worked as an assistant at Black Mountain Golf Club in Black Mountain, N.C.; Grandfather Golf & Country Cub in Linville, N.C.; Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, Fla., and Kittansett Club in Marion, Mass.
Matt Lucchesi assumed the position of director of golf in January following the departure of Joe Zinchini to Cincinnati Country Club. Matt Stewart moved as head professional at the Dye Course to the Nicklaus Course, prompting a search for his replacement.
"This is an exceptional opportunity at an exceptional facility and I am honored to join the Colleton River team as the head professional at the Dye Course," Garrou said.
Bionic golfer joins golf forum
Frank Postman has been added to the lineup of speakers for today's golf forum at Palmetto Dunes Conference Center. Postman will discuss how to golf following major surgery, joint and bone replacement.
The event starts at 7 p.m.
Other speakers include Doug Weaver, instructor at Palmetto Dunes; Clyde Johnston, golf course architect; Krista Dunton, 2006 PGA Carolinas Teacher of the Year; and Jim Ferree, PGA Tour champion and Champions Tour winner.

JPGA players fare well in tournament
Several golfers from Hilton Head Island's Junior Players Golf Academy competed in the Future Collegians World Tour Plantation Inn Open over the weekend in Crystal River, Fla.
Hilton Head Island's Minami Levonowich won the girls 13-18 flight with a 76-73 -- 149. Hilton Head's Courtney Boe tied for third with a 152.
Tokunbo Pedro of Lagos, Nigeria, won the boys 11-13 flight with a 155.
Diego Schiffino won the boys 13-15 division with a 150.
