Cave was selected last month by the South Carolina Coaches Association as one of six assistants under Blacksburg High School coach Michael "Mickey" Moss. This group will lead the South Carolina Sandlappers against the North Carolina Tarheels in the 74th annual contest pitting the 44 best seniors from each state on December 18 at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College.
The Dolphins coach won't find out his Shrine Bowl duties until the first staff meeting on March 20, but just to be in the company of other accomplished coaches is enough for Cave.
"You're talking about working with the 44 best kids in the state, so I'm excited," said Cave, who is entering his third season as head coach of the Dolphins. "The North-South game was a great experience because I learned a lot from the great coaches I was working with.
I'm looking forward to working with coaches who have won state championships, doing what is asked of me and sucking up everything I can suck up from them."
During last December's North-South contest, Cave coached the quarterbacks and running backs and also called offensive plays for the South squad in a 21-17 losing effort.
Cave, who coached at Allendale-Fairfax and North for nine years before taking over at Battery Creek in 2008, has compiled a 7-15 record with the Dolphins. Along the way, Battery Creek snapped a 28-game on-field losing streak in Cave's first season and made consecutive Class 3-A playoff appearances after missing the postseason in each of the four prior years.
