Lt. Renita Berry said a vehicle carrying two males and a femalewas making a U-turn just before 6 p.m. on Trask Parkway when it collided with the deputy's K-9 unit SUV.
A man in the vehicle was pronounced dead, but his identity was not released pending notification of family, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
The deputy suffered some bruising was kept at Beaufort Memorial Hospital overnight, Berry said. The other male in the accident was treated and released and the female was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Her condition was unknown, Berry said.
The police dog received stitches from a veterinarian, Berry said.
S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins said the agency is investigating the incident.
The Highway Patrol was called to another crash Monday on Folly Road near Seaside Road on St. Helena Island about 8:50 p.m. No details of that accident were available late Monday.
