An Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse has joined the field for this year's Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Three-time NCAA National Champion Wake Forest will join 16 other teams representing the ACC, Big 10, Conference USA, Southern Conference, Mid America Conference and the Atlantic Sun Conference today and Tuesday at Wexford Plantation Golf Course on Hilton Head Island.
"I think Wake Forest is the team to beat," Francis Marion University coach Mark Gaynor said. "It's getting a little bit better each year. Over half the teams are the same, but we've got about six new teams. It's a lot of different teams from all up and down the East Coast basically, so it's a lot of fun."
Other teams participating with Wake Forest and Francis Marion are defending champion USC-Aiken, Cleveland State, William and Mary, Davidson, DePaul, Elon, George Mason, Presbyterian, Ohio, Richmond, Samford, Connecticut, Texas-Pan American, Western Carolina and Wofford.
"Wexford Plantation and its members take great pride in serving as the host club for this special event," Wexford director of golf operations Steve Johnson said. "To have these outstanding collegiate golf programs come and compete at such a high level on Wexford's golf course is real enjoyment for our members and area golf fans."
The tournament is open to the public.
