Locals help send love to sick kids
Valentine's Day for a child in a hospital can be a tough time. But through the help of a radio station, the day might be made a bit brighter.
His Music, a Contemporary Christian station with 28 affiliates throughout the Southeast, is gathering homemade valentines from a variety of schools, churches and other places to send to children in hospitals.
The Savannah station, 91.9 FM, is sending the valentines it collects through the Hearts for Kids program to St. Joseph's/Candler Health System, Memorial University Medical Center and Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Contributing this year were the residents at Life Care Center of Hilton Head, a skilled nursing and rehab facility near Hilton Head Hospital.
Kathy Deringer, admissions and marketing director, heard about the program on the radio and introduced it at the facility. Some residents painted, others drew or used collages, and in the end they generated about 80 cards that were sent to the station Thursday.
The Savannah station gets about 4,000 valentines a year, said station manager Jody Robinson.
"It's been a great success in the past six or so years we've done it," he said.
