VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
Battery Creek 78, Stall 34: Javari Albergottie scored 16 points and broke his own school record for 3-pointers, sinking five more on Friday night for 81 on the season. His record from last season with 79.
"You really can't coach that," Battery Creek coach John Drafts said. "When he gets hot, the other guys do a good job of getting the ball to him. He seems to hit them in bunches and that's what makes him so effective."
Battery Creek clinched the Region 8-AAA championship with the victory.
C.J. Brown had a triple-double with 11 points, 11 assists and 10 steals. Brent Evans had 11 points and 11 rebounds, Norman Jenkins scored 13 and Stedman James added 12 points.
For Stall, Corey Rogers scored nine.
Battery Creek (20-2, 8-0) will travel to Bluffton for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
Summerville 53, Beaufort High 46: Mario Pendarvis scored 15 points and Aaron Jiles added 14, leading Summerville past Beaufort High.
For the Eagles, Dymonte Gwathney scored 21 and Rakeem Palmer had 12.
Beaufort High (9-13) will host Fort Dorchester at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Hilton Head High 47, Lake Marion 43: Hilton Head High earned a spot in the Class 3-A playoffs, beating Lake Marion on the road. The win marks the school's first win at Lake Marion.
Leon Hudson scored 16 points and Michael Julian had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Monte Hillard led Lake Marion with 13.
Hilton Head High (8-14, 4-4) will host North Charleston at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Bible Baptist 78, Beaufort Academy 47: Bennett Fultz had a huge game for Beaufort Academy, scoring 32 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, but he was outdone by Bible Baptist's Robert Brown, who poured in 37 points in the teams' regular-season finale in Savannah.
Sophomores Billy Dailey and Jack Griffith added five points apiece for the Eagles (2-19), who finished winless in SCISAA Region 1-AA.
The teams will meet for the third time in two weeks on Tuesday, at a site to be determined, in the opening round of the region playoffs.
"We're getting really familiar with them," Beaufort Academy coach Chip Dinkins said.
Northwood Academy 70, Hilton Head Prep 68: The Dolphins were down 14 points with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, came back to tie it, only to see Northwood Academy hit its final shot of the game to win by two.
"We're like the cardiac kids," Hilton Head Prep coach Rich Basirico said. "Unfortunately we had to come back from so far down, but we did tie it. (Northwood) just happened to make the last shot at the end of the game."
Dominic DiGenova had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Patrick Andrews had 14 points and five rebounds. Matt Layman finished with 11 points and seven assists.
For Northwood, Ishmael Turner scored 23.
Hilton Head Prep (15-7, 4-4) will travel to Thomas Heyward for an 8 p.m. game on Tuesday.
Pinewood Prep 52, Hilton Head Christian 45: Jerome Deas scored 20 points and Bruce Haynes added 15 as Pinewood Prep defeated Hilton Head Christian.
For the Eagles, Ethan Gort had 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Zac Lenns had 13 points and four steals, Chris Ferraro had 10 rebounds and Weston Butler had four assists.
Hilton Head Christian (17-5, 4-4) will host Northwood Academy next Friday.
Porter-Gaud 83, Thomas Heyward 45: Paul Michael Osborne led the Rebels with 15 points in the loss. Scott Malphrus added 11 points and Don Simmons had eight. Marshall Mahan led Thomas Heyward with six rebounds.
Porter-Gaud was led by 6-foot-4 senior Jack Meadors, who scored 17 points.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hilton Head High 51, Lake Marion 30: The Seahawks kept pace in the Region 8-AAA race, winning on the road behind 21 points from Sabrina Drammis and 19 from Margo Dill.
"We played pretty well offensively," Hilton Head High coach Dave Greenberg said. "Margo was very good, Sabrina was excellent and the other kids just played their roles."
Jean Weisner had 10 rebounds and Shy Flemming grabbed six boards for the Seahawks (8-14 overall, 5-3 region), who host North Charleston on Tuesday and Bluffton on Friday.
Raven Scales led Lake Marion with 18 points.
Bible Baptist 80, Beaufort Academy 35: Erika Sharpe scored 19 points, leading Bible Baptist past Beaufort Academy.
For the Eagles, Miranda Westlake scored 16 points, Megan Kahn had 11 rebounds, Charlotte Westcob had three assists and Caroline Carmody made four steals.
Beaufort Academy (9-10, 2-8) is scheduled to play First Baptist on Monday in the SCISAA Region 1-AA tournament.
Summerville 39, Beaufort High 33: Shonolla Council scored 14 points, leading Summerville past Beaufort High.
For the Eagles, Arielle McPhee scored 12, Ebony Watson had eight and Haley Dickson had seven. Jay Shaw, Blake Banner and Deja Jackson each scored two.
Beaufort High (9-13, 0-6) will host Fort Dorchester at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Pinewood Prep 51, Hilton Head Christian 45: Ellie Patterson scored 20 points and Erika Sonberg added 11 but it wasn't enough as Hilton Head Christian lost to Pinewood Prep. Monet Scott paced Pinewood with 16 points.
The Eagles (11-11, 3-6) will host Northwood Academy at 6:15 p.m. next Friday.
Stall 42, Battery Creek 39: The Dolphins missed five open layups and four free throws in the final minutes, losing a heartbreaker to Stall.
Katrece Daniels led the Dolphins with 19 points, Rashidah Jones had 10 and Kierra Wright scored six. Nikki Hill and Latara Grant each scored two.
For Stall, Laticia Singleton scored 29.
Battery Creek (8-13, 4-4) will travel to Bluffton for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday.
Hilton Head Prep 53, Northwood Academy 46: Jill Brunori scored 25 points, had seven steals and dished out four assists as Hilton Head Prep clinched the SCISAA Region 3-AAA championship with a win over Northwood Academy.
The win came at a price though as Kathleen Blum left the game with an ankle injury and Jamese Franklin went down with a dislocated knee. Kate Brunori had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Dolphins.
As a team, Hilton Head Prep forced 29 turnovers.
"Our defense hurt them," Hilton Head Prep coach Bob Sulek said. "We had some nice strips for layups."
For Northwood, Beth Hoisington scored 17 and Amber Campbell scored 12.
Hilton Head Prep (22-3, 9-0) will travel to Ashley Hall at 1:15 p.m. today.
Thomas Heyward 57, Porter-Gaud 48: Caitlyn Cooler scored had 19 points, four assists, four steals and seven rebounds, leading Thomas Heyward past Porter-Gaud.
Kayla Canavan had 17 points, six rebounds and one assist. Jamie Malphrus had six points and eight rebounds.
For Porter-Gaud, Stacey Sarey scored 22 points.
Thomas Heyward (10-8, 2-7) will host Hilton Head Prep on Tuesday.
