A series of public meetings to gather input on new school attendance boundaries kicks off today at 6 p.m. at Beaufort High School.

The changes would affect students at all of the district's high schools, as well as Bluffton area elementary and middle schools.

The boundaries would take effect in the fall if given final approval by the Board of Education.

After hearing several proposals last month, the board gave initial approval at a work session Friday to a student assignment plan that school officials say would better balance enrollment among the district's four high schools and accommodate Whale Branch High School in Seabrook when it opens in the fall.

On Tuesday, the board gave initial approval to new attendance boundaries for middle and elementary schools in the Bluffton area.

SCHEDULED MEETINGS

Public information meetings on proposed changes to attendance boundaries will be:

• 6 p.m. today in the Beaufort High School cafeteria.

• 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Battery Creek High School auditorium.

• 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Hilton Head Island High School media center.

• 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bluffton High School auditorium.

Detailed descriptions of the proposals are available at the school district's Web site at www.beaufort.k12.sc.us.
