Donate or volunteer: The Savannah River Baptist Association is looking for volunteers and donations for its year-round ministries.

Details: Larry Leming, 843-521-7038

Members of Savannah River Baptist Association are playing Santa's elves in Beaufort and Jasper counties this weekend with programs they have in place for children of prison inmates and others whose families can't afford to buy gifts this year.

Thirty-two Southern Baptist churches in the area are part of the association, and most of them are involved in these programs in one way or another -- whether it be by donating time, money or gifts to the children.

The Ridgeland-based association has organized the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree ministry for 48 children whose parents are incarcerated and can't provide Christmas gifts for them. The children will receive their gifts at a party today at Port Royal Baptist Church.

The association also is hosting "Happy birthday, Jesus" parties for at least 150 needy children in the area this weekend.

The association works with groups such as the Beaufort Housing Authority and the Boys & Girls Club to find families in need. At the parties, the children play games, eat snacks and receive gifts.

"It's just what God has called me to do," said Larry Leming, a missionary with the association. "And that's just as plain and simple as I can put it. ... It's just a way to get to meet needs and share his love at the same time, and so that's the best of both worlds."
