The victim told deputies he pulled into the parking lot of a gas station on Trask Parkway at about 11 p.m. and was approached by the man, who asked for a ride to Yemassee. The two men went north on Trask Parkway, the release said.
The hitchhiker asked the victim to stop so he could use the bathroom. The victim pulled over near Laurel Bay Road. A few minutes later, the suspect returned, brandished a handgun and told the victim to get out of the vehicle, according to the release.
The suspect drove north on Trask Parkway in the victim's blue 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, the release said. The victim was unharmed and walked to a nearby gas station to call for help.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic man, 35 to 40 years old, about 5-feet-10, 160 pounds, wearing blue jeans, a brown hat and a dark-colored coat.
The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to contact the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777.
