Class Notes, Dec. 7: Students win awards in library film festival

The Beaufort County Library has announced the winners of this fall's Teen Film Festival.

Students between 11 and 17 were invited to create and submit films of less than 10 minutes as part of the library's summer reading program. Films were rated in 11 categories: script, stunts, editing, props, location, costumes, directing, visual effects, sound effects, leading actor and supporting actor.

Festivals were held at the Beaufort and Bluffton branches in October. Winners included:

• Lady's Island Intermediate School: "iPod: Lost and Found" by Margaret LaVigne, Anna Sheppard and Melis Tihri won Best Overall for Middle School Submissions; "Big Treasure" by Tiffany Dorrill, Stephanie Lawrence and Chase Puckett won Best Supporting Actor; "Big Discovery" by Emily Ramos, Riley Porter, Mya Belden, Sydney Borg and Carly Morehouse won Best Leading Actor; and "Forgotten In Time" by Taylor MacDaniel, Zac Dubuque, and Trenton Ralston won Best Directed.

• Beaufort High school: "In the Window" by Jake Bellew won Best Overall for High School Submissions and "The Great Attempt" by Jake Bellew won Best Use of Props.

• Battery Creek High School: "Overlooked: The Forgotten Tool" by Ed Mathews' 2008-2009 class won Best Directed.

District to screen kids for gifted arts program

The Beaufort County School District will screen students in third through eighth grades for its Artistically Gifted and Talented program in January. The deadline to submit applications for the annual screening is Dec. 17.

Screenings will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 23 at Robert Smalls Middle School and from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 30 at Hilton Head Island Middle School.

Students identified as artistically gifted in dance, drama, music or visual arts will be eligible for arts education opportunities offered by individual schools and the district. Opportunities include the Sea Island School for Arts and Academics summer camp and DaVinci Days creative arts workshops.

BATTERY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL

• The Fine Arts Department Winter Gala featuring contributions by chorus, band, strings, dance, drama and visual arts students will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the John J. McVey performing arts center. Admission is a donation of canned food.

• The Athletic Booster Club meets at 6 p.m. today in the cafeteria.

• The MCJROTC and the SADD Club are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children ages 1 to 12 for Toys for Tots. Toys -- including board games, school supplies, stuffed animals and puzzles -- can be dropped off in the MCJROTC office or in Mrs. Grooms' office through Dec. 16. BEAUFORT ACADEMY

• A holiday concert will be at 2 p.m. Friday.

• Exams will be given Dec. 14-17.

BEAUFORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

• The PTO and SIC meet jointly at 6 p.m. today.

• The science fair will be Dec. 14-18.

BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL

• The Bands of Beaufort High, directed by Dana Scaglione, will give a holiday concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium. Admission is free. Details: 843-322-2174, dana.scaglione@beaufort.k12.sc.us

• The girls basketball team will sponsor an alumni game at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 26. To participate, former girls or boys players should contact Coach Wade at 843-322-2000 or Marilyn.Wade@beaufort.k12.sc.us.

BEAUFORT MIDDLE SCHOOL

• A book fair will be in the library media center from Dec. 14-17.

• The National Junior Honor Society is collecting items for the animal shelter, including blankets, paper towels, dog food and cat food. Bring items to the library media center by Dec. 16.

• Mrs. Pierson's multi-age class has started practicing for the north of the Broad Bowling Special Olympics, which will be Dec. 17.

JOSEPH J. SHANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

• The annual Christmas program will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Fourth- and fifth-graders will present "A Christmas Carol."

• Shanklin Night at Chick-fil-A will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

LADY'S ISLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

• MAP testing for second through fourth grades is through Dec. 18.

• A Kids Club Reading Carousel for pre-kindergarten through first grades will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria.

LADY'S ISLAND MIDDLE AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

• The Student Cafeteria Advisory Committee will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the principal's conference room.

• There will be cheerleading practice from 2:35 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school gym.

• There will be a home basketball game against Hilton Head Island Middle School at 5 p.m. Thursday in the gym. Cost is $4 for anyone older than 5.

ST. PETER CATHOLIC SCHOOL

• The Storybook Shoppe of Beaufort has named 7-year-old Henry Centeno the first winner of the store's Reader of the Month program.

• Mass will be at noon Tuesday in the church.

• The Christmas program will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the church.

• There will be no school Mass on Friday.

• A middle school dance will be Saturday in the Walsh-Palmetto Room.

SHELL POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

• MAP testing is through Friday.

• A PTO Movie Night will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium.

• Student council members will participate in "Wreaths Across America" at noon Saturday in the Beaufort National Cemetery.
