The contest at Hardeeville marks the season opener for both boys teams. Ridgeland has won the last two meetings and returns 10 players from last year's squad, but the Jaguars are without top scorer Brent Walker, who is expected to miss two weeks while recovering from knee surgery.
The Hurricanes are also missing their best player from a year ago with the graduation of Tremayne Harris (18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game). However, swingman Roman Hughes leads an athletic squad that has tools to hang with Ridgeland's transition offense and pressure defense.
On the girls side, Hardeeville (1-0) hopes to build the same momentum that pushed it into last year's Class 1-A state title game. Senior guard Shantis Lee got off to a good start with 20 points in a season-opening win and all-state senior forward Jomanda Smalls (14.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest last year) could pose a matchup problem for the undersized Jaguars, who have just one player standing at six feet tall.
Ridgeland's girls will look to draw upon their experience, led by the quickness of Cassandra Heyward and the addition of 3-point threat Kala Brown, who transferred from Hilton Head High.
