Effingham tri-match: Hilton Head High's wrestling season got off to a good start as the Seahawks defeated Screven County 81-0 and Georgia's defending Class 4-A state champion Effingham County 51-21 in a tri-match in Springfield, Ga.
Hilton Head High wrestlers that finished the day 2-0 were Label Lewis (103), Richard Jenkins (119), Chris Ordonez (125), Campbell Miller (130), Nic Levy (135), Seth Anthony (145), Quinn Williams-McClure (152), Ray Harrington (189), Jack Duane (215) and Marques Johnson (HWT).
The Seahawks (2-0) will compete in the Southern Slam on Friday and Saturday in Eastside, Ga.
Ashley Ridge 45, Battery Creek 33: The Dolphins lost their first wrestling match of the season, falling to Ashley Ridge on the road. Battery Creek winners were Carlos Andaverde (135), Matt Heinrich (152), Jonathan Smith (171), Luke Johnson (189), Bear Childers (215) and David Ratliff (HWT).
Losers were Chris Bockelman (112), Jimmy Sanchez (119), Josh Green (125), Timothy Webb (130), Joshua Fields (140), Deshawn Smalls (145) and Bryon Houston (160).
The Dolphins (0-1) will compete in the B-Town Throwdown on Saturday at Bluffton High School.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
Hilton Head Prep 62, Calhoun Academy 20: Dominic DiGenova scored 20 points, leading Hilton Head Prep to an easy win in the Shoney's Coastal Invitational at Orangeburg Prep.
Matt Layman had 10 points and six steals, Alex Orford had nine points and five rebounds, DeAnte Scott had eight points and Dimitri Lowry had five points and four assists.
Hilton Head Prep (3-0) will play Thomas Heyward at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Colleton Prep.
Hilton Head Christian 52, Laurence Manning 29: Weston Butler scored 10 points, had five steals and dished out four assists as Hilton Head Christian rolled to victory in the second round of the Shoney's Coastal Invitational at Colleton Prep.
The Eagles made up for a sluggish start on the defensive side of the ball, limiting Laurence Manning to seven points in the second half.
Taylor MacDonald had nine points and eight rebounds, Zac Lenns had nine points and four steals and Devin McGuinness and Michael Hull had seven rebounds each.
The Eagles (2-0) will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Dorchester Academy for the semifinals.
Thomas Heyward 61, Colleton Prep 58: Scott Malphrus scored 22 points and Don Simmons had 20, leading Thomas Heyward past Colleton Prep in the second round of the Shoney's Coastal Invitational.
Paul Michael Osborne had eight, Perry Pender had five, Logan Mock had four and Brandon Nettles had two.
The Rebels will face Hilton Head Prep in the semifinal round at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Colleton Prep.
Allendale-Fairfax 53, Beaufort High 52: Beaufort High held a one-point lead with six seconds left in regulation but couldn't hold on as Allendale-Fairfax won the game at the free throw line.
The Tigers finished 26-of-32 from the foul line while Beaufort High was 9-of-23.
Allendale-Fairfax's Markeith Thomas did the most damage to the Eagles, scoring 14 points.
For Beaufort High, Jordan Adderly had 16 points, Dymonte Gwathney had 15 and Lorenzo Moore had 10. Beaufort High (1-3) will host Allendale-Fairfax at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
Beaufort High 68, Allendale-Fairfax 54: Blake Banner scored 19 points as Beaufort High defeated Allendale-Fairfax.
Arielle McPhee had 11 points and Deja Jackson had 10.
Natasha Bates paced Allendale with 13.
Beaufort High (3-1) will host Allendale at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Hilton Head Prep 67, Calhoun Academy 25: Kate Brunori scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, leading Hilton Head Prep to a win over Calhoun Academy in the second round of the Shoney's Coastal Invitational at Orangeburg Prep.
Alexa Jolley scored a career-high 15 points and had seven rebounds. Kathleen Blum had five steals and eight assists while Jill Brunori had 12 points and six steals. The Dolphins (4-1) will face Thomas Heyward in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Colleton Prep. The team will be shorthanded for the next three games as Blum and Lane Czura travel to Texas to compete in a national soccer tournament.
Thomas Heyward 41, Colleton Prep 35: Brielle Jungblut scored 14 points and had three steals, leading Thomas Heyward over Colleton Prep in the second round of the Shoney's Coastal Invitational.
Kayla Canavan had nine points and Jamie Malphrus had seven points and nine rebounds.
For Colleton Prep, Sarah McDonald had 10 points.
Thomas Heyward (5-0) will face Hilton Head Prep at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinals.
