The number of families asking for help from Operation Holiday Heroes has increased 40 percent compared to this time last year, leaving the program in need of donations, according to a news release.

Operation Holiday Heroes strives to ensure every child has a present under the tree to open on Christmas morning.

To contribute money for purchase of extra toys and food vouchers, send a check payable to Operation Holiday Heroes to United Way of the Lowcountry, PO Box 202, Beaufort, SC29901. Donations of toys or money also can be brought to the United Way office at 2266 Boundary St. in Beaufort. Toys for Tots drop-off locations will be announced for contributions of new, unwrapped toys.

Volunteers also are needed for such tasks as sorting toys. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially needed, the news release said.

To volunteer, call the United Way at 843-982-3040.
