Man robbed at gunpoint at Hilton Head apartment complex

A 27-year-old Hilton Head Island man was robbed at gunpoint late Monday in the parking lot of The Gardens apartment complex, police said.

The man told police he was walking at about 11:30 p.m. to visit a friend who lives in the apartment complex when he was approached by an unknown man who asked him for money. When the victim refused the man money, the suspect punched him in the face, according to the police report.

Four other men -- one pointing a handgun -- then searched his pockets. The five suspects took the man's wallet and cell phone and ran away in an unknown direction, police said. The victim told investigators he recognized two of the suspects.
