As of Monday afternoon, officers had not named a suspect nor stated a motive for the shootings at 20 Player Road that also injured Mullen's 2-year-old son, according to a Beaufort County sheriff news release. Investigators, however, are interviewing a person of interest, according to the release.
At about 7 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of three gunshot victims and discovered Mullen and her two sons shot inside the home. A relative had stopped by the house that evening and discovered the victims.
Mullen and Waltfredo Davis-Mullen were pronounced dead at the scene. The 2-year-old boy was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he remains in an undisclosed condition, according to the release.
Friends and relatives of the victims still have many unanswered questions, said Alleen Porter, 36, a friend of the victims.
She spoke with Jeanine Mullen's mother Monday morning and said she "seemed to be holding up well."
Mullen worked as a kindergarten teaching assistant at Shanklin Elementary School, where Porter is the assistant principal.
An "eerie feeling" washed through the school Monday as students and coworkers grappled with what had happened to their former instructor and colleague, Porter said.
A guidance counselor and school social worker were on hand to talk with Mullen's students and help keep them calm and focused, she said.
"We're feeling a tremendous loss," Porter said. "There's a void."
The school and its Parent Teacher Organization will plan a ceremony at which they will plant a tree and install a park bench in Mullen's honor, Porter said. Plans for that ceremony won't be finalized until after Mullen's family holds its services, which haven't been announced.
Mullen was a loving, single mother of four, Porter said. Her two other sons, ages 11 and 13, weren't at home during the shooting, she said.
Shaquana Jenkins, 30, of Seabrook had known Mullen for about 12 years and described her as a wonderful friend and mother. One of Mullen's older boys called Jenkins on Monday at about 12:30 a.m., asking if she had seen the news, Jenkins said.
The brothers called Waltfredo David-Mullen "little Fred."
"He said 'my mom and little Fred are both gone,' " Jenkins said. "The sound of his voice, it sounded like he was in shock, too."
Friends described Mullen on Sunday as a fun, outgoing person, but who had been the victim of domestic violence in the past.
Jeanine Mullen is the daughter of Frank and Roberta Mullen of Dale.
Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals is in charge of the arrangements.
