Stricken island councilman Safay in stable condition

Hilton Head Island Town Councilman John Safay was listed in stable condition in the intensive-care unit of Hilton Head Hospital Saturday after suffering a heart attack Friday, a hospital official said.

Safay, 62, collapsed while playing tennis Friday afternoon, Hilton Head town manager Steve Riley said Friday.

Safay was then admitted to Hilton Head Hospital.

He was first elected in 2001 to represent Ward 4 on the island's east side.
