The IRS is looking for some area residents, but it's not what you think.

This year the IRS had more than $4.5 million in undeliverable refunds to residents of South Carolina and North Carolina because of address errors, and many of them are in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

For residents to receive their checks, they must update their addresses online at IRS.gov under the heading, "Where's My Refund?"

Taxpayers also need to submit their Social Security numbers, filing status and the amount of their refund from the previous year, according to a news release from the IRS.

You can check your refund by calling 1-800-829-1954.

The easiest way to your check gets delivered in the future is to choose direct deposit when you file your return, the release says. The IRS deposits refunds into your personal checking or savings accounts, a service available for both paper and electronic returns.

The average refund increased 16 percent this year from $990 per check to $1,148. The IRS attributes the increase to tax law changes including the first-time homebuyer's credit and the recovery rebate credit.
