Oct. 30 prep roundup: Hilton Head Christian earns top seed in SCISAA playoffs

Hilton Head Christian 24, Northwood Academy 10: Hilton Head Christian won the SCISAA Region 2-AA title and secured home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the playoffs with an impressive win over Uriah Singleton and Northwood Academy on Friday night.

Quarterback Luke Sirgo led the team in rushing with 61 yards and two TDs on 16 carries. He threw for 188 yards on 17-of-23 passing with no interceptions.

Ethan Gort led the team in receiving with 86 yards on six catches. He also had a solid defensive game with three tackles, three QB hurries and one pass deflection.

Zac Lenns had 32 receiving yards on four catches and sealed the win with a fourth-quarter interception.

Michael Hull led the Eagles' defense with nine tackles and Kyle Weaver also had a big game, recording a sack to end a drive.

As a unit, HHCA's defense held Singleton to under 100 yards.

"I can't say enough about our defense," Hilton Head Christian coach Tommy Lewis said. "Our players are just good about picking up what the defensive coaches teach them and they're aggressive. They love to hit and do their jobs. We don't have any egos or hot dogs out there. They just play hard, fundamental football."

Shea Watkins also booted a 40-yard field goal in the win.

Hilton Head Christian (9-1, 6-0) will host Calhoun Academy in the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Battery Creek 54, Lake Marion 6: Cecil Franklin had four rushing touchdowns and Joshua Fields ran in three as Battery Creek dominated region foe Lake Marion to earn a spot in the Class 3-A state playoffs.

Alex Sharpe also caught a touchdown pass.

"We were able to establish the run early," Battery Creek coach Carlos Cave said. "The offensive line played a lot better and the defense played well."

After Friday's games, North Charleston wins Region 8-AAA, Hilton Head High comes in second, Battery Creek takes third, Lake Marion is fourth and Bluffton is eliminated.

The Dolphins (3-7, 2-3) will travel to Region 6-AAA representative Lake City for the first round of the playoffs next Friday.

Ridgeland 28, Edisto 25: Ridgeland rallied past Edisto in the second half to clinch a first-round home playoff game. The Jaguars trailed 17-6 at halftime but came back strong in the final two quarters to earn a date with Cane Bay next Friday in the Class 2-A playoffs.

The Jaguars improve to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 5-AA.

Hardeeville 47, Lincoln 12: Jarrell Knighton scored three touchdowns, finishing with 218 rushing yards for the Hurricanes. Marquis Moody scored two touchdowns. Michael Kinlaw had a 44-yard score and Clarence Brooks had a 46-yarder. Hardeeville improves to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in Region 6-A.

Colleton Prep 53, Thomas Heyward 26: Thomas Heyward's season came to an end with a loss to Colleton Prep in SCISAA Region 2-AA action. After a promising start, the Rebels (3-7, 2-4) ended the season with three straight losses.

Beaufort Academy at Patrick Henry: Beaufort Academy lost its final game of the season on the road to Patrick Henry. Like many games this year, the Eagles were competitive in the first half but ran out of steam in the final two quarters.

Morgan Capen had 82 rushing yards and a touchdown, Michael Chapin had 108 total yards of offense and one TD and quarterback Stephen Baggett scored the other touchdown.

On defense, Chapin had 14 tackles, Baggett had nine tackles and Zach Rentz had nine tackles and two sacks. Chapin also had 98 yards in returns.

The Eagles end their first season of SCISAA 8-man independent football with a record of 1-8.

"I feel very, very good about the future of Beaufort Academy," Beaufort Academy coach Wheatley Alford said. "We had quite a few juniors and sophomores that did not participate this year that have expressed great interest in being a part of this program next year.
