The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary and armed robbery at a Burton home Wednesday night. Just after 9 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 hang up from a home at 40 Roseida Road Extension.

The home’s occupants said they’d just been robbed at gunpoint by an unknown suspect.

The victims, a 27-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman, and their 5-month-old son heard a knock at the door.

The man answered the door and was met by a stranger armed with a handgun. The suspect demanded money and entered the home.

The woman, who had been doing laundry in another part of the home, came to see who was there. She ran to a back bedroom to call 911, during which time she heard a shot fired.

The man, who had run to the living room to protect his son, had thrown his wallet to the suspect and was crouched on the floor, shielding his child, when the suspect fired a single shot into the floor. The suspect then fled the home.

The mother grabbed the child and ran to a neighbor’s house.

Witnesses said the suspect got into a dark green Chevy Suburban that headed toward Laurel Bay Road.

No one was injured.

The suspect was described as a black man between the ages of 40-45, approximately 5 foot 10, 250 pounds, with lightly graying hair on the sides of his head. He was wearing a blue button-up collared shirt, blue jeans, and a “biker-style” hat.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Investigator Sgt C. Wilson at 843-470-3213 or the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777.
