The anniversary celebration will encourage residents to look forward to the next chapter in the school’s history: a focus on the arts at USCB’s historic Beaufort campus.
“It’s about celebrating where we’ve been and being celebratory and thankful about where we’re going,” Reynolds said. “It’s going to be so fun.”
USCB opened in the Beaufort College building with 57 students in 1959 as a two-year college that provided local access to the University of South Carolina system. In 2004, USCB became a four-year college and began serving students on the 200-acre Bluffton campus.
More than 1,650 students now pursue 13 degree programs and six pre-professional tracks at USCB.
A three-day arts event called Art, Artifice & Acquisition will kick off the school’s Golden Jubilee next week. USCB will host more than two dozen speakers, concerts and art exhibitions over the next six months to continue the celebration.
Art, Artifice & Acquisition begins Nov. 5 with a cocktail reception and silent auction, said Colleen Callahan, director of development for USCB.
At the reception, guests can meet the three experts who will give lectures on the arts Nov. 6 at Seminar Day. The lecturers are Ronnie Baer of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, “The Gardner Heist” author Ulrich Boser and local art appraiser Kelly Dykes.
Dykes will appraise residents’ property Nov. 7 and teach spectators about the appraisal process, Callahan said. Money raised through Art, Artifice & Acquisition will benefit the USCB’s new studio-art degree and pay to renovate arts classrooms, Callahan said.
USCB received final approval in August for a four-year degree in studio art, paving the way for a plan to transform the school’s Beaufort location into a niche campus focused on fine-arts education. Callahan said she hopes the campus will soon offer dance, theater, music and set-design programs.
