Gerards wins Calibogue Cup sailing race

Chris Gerards and his crew sailed Ellipsis to victory in the Spinnaker class of the Calibogue Cup races held Saturday and Sunday in Calibouge Sound, offHilton Head Island.

With the victory, Gerards and his crew took home the Island Packet trophy, awarded to the overall race winner.

A total of five races were held with 15 boats entered in three separate racing classes. The smallest of the entrants were the 20-foot long Harbor 20s, weighing in at 1,800 pounds plus a crew of two. The largest class was the 40-foot long Island Packet cutter division weighing in at 23,000-pounds with a crew of four.

Savannah's Leo Peloquin won the non-Spinnaker class in his boat Pelican. Ned Nelson won the Harbour 20 class in his boat Unwind.

According to race chairman Bill Lawrenson, great sailing weather on Saturday was followed by stiff winds and rough waters on Sunday.

The boat Antares retired from the last race on Sunday after the traveler on the main sail broke in the strong wind, while the boat $cholar$hip was involved in a collision with another competitor while it jockeyed forposition at the start of the same race.

There was only minor damage to the boats and no one was hurt.

Non-Spinnaker class

Harbor 20 class

1. Ned Nielsen in Unwind, 2. Tom Webster inSlingshot, 3. Paul Miller in Rooster
