Marinaro 10th in Assistant Championship

Harbour Town Golf Links assistant professional Chris Marinaro earned a ticket to the first stage of next year's PGA Tour qualifying school with a strong finish in the 2009 Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship over the weekend in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Marinaro qualified for the tournament by winning the Carolinas Section Assistant Championship this summer in Pinehurst, N.C.

The championship hosted winners from across the country.

Marinaro had a four-day score of 65-72-71-72 -- 280 to tie for 10th place, 15 strokes behind winner Tim Thelen of New Ulm, Texas.

Werenski wins IJGT event

Michael Werenski, of South Hadley, Mass., fired a career-low 68 to win the boys 16-19 division of the International Junior Golf Tour's tournament on Sunday at Oyster Reef.

Marco Polanco of the Dominican Republic and Boomer Malanchuk of Arlington, Va., tied for second.

The boys 13-15 division was won by Matthew Rushton of Johannesburg, South Africa, with a 146. The U-12 flight was won by Noah Edmonson of Davidson, N.C.

The girls 15-19 flight was won by Rika Park of Fujieda-Shi-Shizouka, Japan, with a 69.

Vilcheck 2nd in HJGT event

Bluffton's Chandler Vilcheck finished second in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Living Fuel Junior Open over the weekend at Emerald Greens Golf Resort and Country Club in Tampa, Fla.

Vilcheck finished with a 77-69 -- 146, two strokes behind winner Jamie Veloz of Englewood, Fla.

Colleton River, Chechessee honored in Golf World

Readers of Golf World magazine recently ranked Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton the 19th best private club in America and ranked Chechessee Creek Club in Okatie No. 29. Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., earned the top spot followed by Augusta National.

Field set for Tradition Four-Ball

The South Carolina Golf Association has announced teams for the 15th annual Tradition Four-Ball to be held this weekend at Pebble Creek Country Club in Taylors.

Local teams include Bluffton's Jonathan Phillips and Brenden Fick, Bluffton's Wesley Long and Charlie Spencer-White, Hilton Head Island's Nathalie Lezcano and Summerville's Reona Hirai and Bluffton's Kendra Collins and Edgefield's Anne Marie Covar.

Junior teams ages 10-18 were accepted based on their respective playing resumes and the Heritage Classic Foundation Rankings.

Lampe wins Moss Creek club championship

Bob Lampe won the Men's Club Championship at Moss Creek Golf Club over the weekend, beating out runner-up Mike Croyle in single-elimination match play. Bill Cawthon won the first flight, Cary Mayo won the second, Buzz Althans won the third, Steve Ciuni won the fourth, Jim Vogel won the fifth and Don Reynolds won the sixth.

European team wins Sun City Ryder Cup

The European team won the Sun City Ryder Cup by a score of 25 1/2 points to 22 1/2 points. European captain Lou Rhoden and American captain Fred Jones directed their 48 players through the two-day competition known as "The Commotion by the Ocean."

The matches were played at Okatie Creek and featured best-ball alternate shots.
