Panel approves pizzeria plan

The Hilton Head Island Design Review Board approved plans for a new pizzeria at the Mall at Shelter Cove.

Paulie's Pizza, which has a location near Sea Turtle Cinemas in Bluffton, plans to open next to Saks Off-Fifth Avenue by the end of the year and offer indoor and outdoor seating.

Wexford Plantation, an exclusive,south-end Hilton Head Island neighborhood, has a $3.5 million plan to revamp its clubhouse by expanding the restaurant and enhancing views of its harbor.

On Tuesday, the town's Design Review Board unanimously approved the 2,400-square-foot addition to the 8,800-square-foot clubhouse. The expansion will increase seating capacity from 160 to about 220. The small kitchen and game room also will be expanded.

Plans to update the 25-year-old clubhouse have been in the works for almost a decade, but the club's membership only recently decided on the design, said the plantation's infrastructure manager Richard Thompson.

More than 80 percent of the 460 lot owners voted in favor of the plans, said architect Dan Ogden.

"At this point, we can't move fast enough," he said.

Construction is expected to begin in December and be finished by summer.

The new dining room features walls of large windows revealing views of the 37-acre, 118-slip marina.

"The membership really wants to take advantage of the view we have," Thompson said.

Town officials praised the project, which will be built above existing golf cart storage facilities.

"It's virtually a seamless addition to what's there now," said Mike Roan, town design review administrator. "It's really well done."
