A two-car wreck Thursday morning closed the only road connecting Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island to mainland Port Royal for about two hours and caused a slow commute for some drivers in northern Beaufort County.

The Parris Island Fire Department was called to the Gen. E.A. Pollock Memorial Causeway, a bridge that spans Archers Creek, at about 7:15 a.m., said Cpl. Jon Holmes, depot spokesman.

Two people from each vehicle were transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor, non life-threatening injuries, Holmes said. Both vehicles suffered minor damage.

Holmes said firefighters closed the causeway to investigate the crash, tend to the injured and have the two vehicles towed.
