Property that includes the Old Carolina golf course in Bluffton is scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder at a foreclosure auction next month.

CoastalStates Bank started foreclosure proceedings in May, claiming a company registered to the property's owner, David Staley, had defaulted on a $1.3 million loan secured by the property.

The auction, scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Beaufort County Courthouse, is the latest development in the course's tumultuous history.

Staley has long tried to sell the course, which was built in 1996 as an 18-hole layout. It shut down in 2005 and reopened in 2006 in a nine-hole format. Developers won zoning approval to build housing on the former back nine and driving range.

At least one person is interested in buying the course.

Paul Schell, the club's head pro, said this week his father wanted to purchase the 94-acre course and keep it out of foreclosure but was unable to complete a deal with Staley and the bank.

Schell, who once planned to buy the club himself, said his father remains interested in buying the course for him, but only if the course and its associated restaurant, pro shop and maintenance facilities can be purchased separately from the land slated for housing.

"If they're just going to sell the whole thing, Dad has no interest whatsoever," Schell said.

Schell said he still hopes the property can be split up.

"I'm fairly confident no matter what happens Dad will buy it from somebody," he said.

Regardless of who owns the course, Schell said he plans to continue managing it.

He said he is disappointed a deal could not be struck to keep the course from the auction block.

"It would've just been a smooth, smooth change," he said. "Who knows what's going to happen now?"

Staley and bank officials could not be reached Thursday.
